Melioidosis Outbreak after Typhoon, Southern Taiwan
نویسندگان
چکیده
From July through September 2005, shortly after a typhoon, 40 cases of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection (melioidosis) were identified in southern Taiwan. Two genotypes that had been present in 2000 were identified by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Such a case cluster confirms that melioidosis is endemic to Taiwan.

متن کاملSuccessful treatment of life-threatening melioidosis with activated protein C and meropenem.
Melioidosis is an endemic disease in southeast Asia and northern Australia, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. A typhoon-related outbreak occurred in southern Taiwan in July 2005. High mortality in melioidosis associated with bacteremic pneumonia and septic shock. We report a patient with life-threatening melioidosis who developed rapid progression of bacteremic pneumonia with acute respirato...
متن کاملThe Concentrations of Ambient Burkholderia Pseudomallei during Typhoon Season in Endemic Area of Melioidosis in Taiwan
BACKGROUND Melioidosis is a severe bacterial infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei with a high case-fatality rate. Epidemiological and animal studies show the possibility of inhalation transmission. However, no B. pseudomallei concentrations in ambient air have been researched. Here, we developed a method to quantify ambient B. pseudomallei and then measured concentrations of ambient B....

We document the first report of plasmid-encoded CMY-2-type AmpC -lactamase identified among Shigella sonnei isolates resistant to ceftriaxone and obtained after an outbreak of bacillary dysentery in Taiwan. One hundred eighty-two children in two elementary schools in Yu-Li, Taiwan, where an outbreak occurred after a typhoon hit this area in 2001, were enrolled in this study. Clinical and epidem...
متن کاملEpidemiological Characteristics of Lower Extremity Cellulitis after a Typhoon Flood
OBJECTIVE The flood after a typhoon may lead to increase in patients with cellulitis of lower limbs. However, the microbiological features of these cases are rarely reported. We conducted a study of patients with lower extremity cellulitis after a typhoon followed in southern Taiwan to study the risk factors of cellulitis and the bacteriological features of the patients. METHODS We reviewed a...
